This sunny yellow building is still standing on its original site, built not long after the Fairplay fire in 1873.
It was the home of Colonel Frank Mayer. Col. Mayer for the last twelve years of his life. Col. Mayer died in Fairplay on February 2, 1954, at the age of 104. He lived a long and adventure-filled life and is well known for being the "last of the buffalo hunters." Lucy Tarbell of Denver privately owned the home for many years, and the general public was not allowed inside. It was purchased from her heirs in 1985. Lucy Roth's husband, Charles, was a long-time friend of the colonel's and co-author of his book The Buffalo Harvest. The colonel's home is furnished with period furniture representing his lifestyle, some of which belonged to Mayer during his last years.
